FREMANTLE federal Labor MP Melissa Parke is supporting a growing movement amongst Labor backbenchers to defy the party hierarchy and call for an end to live animal exports. NSW Labor MP Janelle Saffin is set to move a motion opposing the trade, with the support of Ms Parke and Tassie rural MP Dick Adams.

FREMANTLE Labor MP Melissa Parke will learn in the next week whether her party will back her historic bid to ban the patenting of human genes. Party whips are due to set the agenda for the next session of the hung parliament and Ms Parke has asked them to consider her bill to amend the Patents Act, preventing biomedical companies from laying claim to parts of the human body. Ms Parke says she objects to companies controlling access to knowledge about the human body and stymying medical research. New rules governing the hung parliament mean private members’ bills are given more weight than in the past.

MELISSA PARKE has joined Alannah MacTiernan in blasting Labor’s federal election campaign. The Fremantle MP was returned last weekend, suffering a three per cent swing. She says the party at the national level has for too long been run by professional apparatchiks with no passion, and who consistently provide poor advice.

MELISSA PARKE wants a Royal Commission held into the death of a man being transported in the back of a prison transport van. Aboriginal elder Mr Ward literally baked to death in the back of the van during a four-hour drive from Laverton to Kalgoorlie. Last week the state government announced $3.2 million compensation to the dead man’s family. A government inquiry resulted in no charges being laid against the private security firm or the officers involved.
