ELECTRIC prods are being used illegally on Fremantle wharf, with the painful devices being shoved into the faces of sheep and cattle during the loading of live exports. It is illegal to use prods on the face or genitals. Footage received by the Fremantle Herald shows the prods being used indescriminately.

FREMANTLE federal Labor MP Melissa Parke is supporting a growing movement amongst Labor backbenchers to defy the party hierarchy and call for an end to live animal exports. NSW Labor MP Janelle Saffin is set to move a motion opposing the trade, with the support of Ms Parke and Tassie rural MP Dick Adams.

DOGS dressed as sheep and placard-waving protestors were at state parliament this week with a 5000-signature petition demanding an end to the live animal trade. Fremantle council recently voted to promote phasing out the trade.

FREMANTLE MP Adele Carles has slammed the State Budget for propping up the port but ignoring the city’s cultural and retail centre. In her budget reply speech in parliament Thursday the ex-Green now independent MP said there was a tonne of money for the port but very little for locals.

PLANS for a Little Creatures’ boutique hotel are in the pipeline for Fishing Boat Harbour next to the brewery/pub. In a statement to the stock exchange last week Little Creatures said it was looking at building a small hotel on surplus land.
