Time for action: MP Carles wants netball to move south for light rail plan

FREMANTLE independent green MP Adele Carles has developed a feasibility study for a light rail pilot project down Hampton Road and is calling on the Barnett government to roll it out in the 2011/12 budget. Light rail has been debated for more than 10 years but with an additional 30,000 people predicted to boost the population immediately south of the port city it’s time for action, she says.

Child shame laws slammed

FREMANTLE independent MP Adele Carles has slammed the Barnett government’s proposed “name and shame” law saying it is doomed to fail. Ms Carles told parliament this week the law breached international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Under the plan offenders aged 16 and over will have their photo and crime published on the internet.

ADELE CARLES has asked WA commerce minister Bill Marmion to wind up the Wyola Club. Her call follows a farcical special meeting that was held last Saturday, called by members keen to see Phil Douglas and the club’s management sacked and the Bannister Street property returned to the club.

THE Greens are vowing to oppose proposed new planning laws when they hit the state upper house for review. The proposed laws strip elected councils of authority on major planning decisions, handing power to panels dominated by unelected appointees, hand-picked by the planning minister.

ADELE CARLES says it is against the law for Fremantle council to try and force staff to wear GPS tracking devices. The council’s plan to strap GPS to parking inspectors, coin collectors and technicians was revealed in last week’s Herald.

FREMANTLE MP Adele Carles has slammed the State Budget for propping up the port but ignoring the city’s cultural and retail centre. In her budget reply speech in parliament Thursday the ex-Green now independent MP said there was a tonne of money for the port but very little for locals.

ADELE CARLES has quit the WA Greens and will sit in state parliament as an independent after falling out with her former upper house colleagues. The Fremantle MP told the Herald her relationship with senior Greens MLC Giz Watson had completely broken down. Her decision, effective Thursday May 6, robs the Greens of official party status, which it has enjoyed for the first time in its 20-year history and which entitled it to extra resources and staff.
